Great advice to keep your lawn looking its best

Let’s Talk Fertilization

Fertilizer Components – (N-P-K)

Typically, fertilizers contain a combination of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium (N-P-K). The combinations of these three elements will be displayed on the product itself, for example in combinations like 20-10-5, 16-8-8, etc., depending on the percentage of each ingredient. They can often include other ingredients like: Iron, Zinc, Magnesium, and more.

Frequency

Generally, it’s a good practice to fertilize newly planted turfgrass on a regular schedule as outlined by turfgrass types. It’s always important; however, to follow the label’s directions based on the product you are using. Fertilizer needs vary by grass type and season.

3-D Bluegrass ™ Elite Plus ™ (Tall fescue) Sportstuff ™ (Bluegrass and Perennial Ryegrass)

For newly planted sod, an application of uniform fertilizer as noted above should be applied every 4-6 weeks for the first year after installation. This is due in part that most soils that are receiving new turf are deplete of nutrients for proper grass growth. The application of a high quality, slow-release nitrogen fertilizer with 3-5% iron i.e. (20-10-5+5% iron) is highly recommended. Apply a uniform application at a rate listed on the fertilizer bag label.

Ecoloturf ™ (Fine fescue)

One will need to apply only about 50% of normal fertility levels of bluegrass and tall fescue. Therefore, apply a normal application 4-5 weeks after installation. Thereafter, apply only 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 pounds of available, slow-release nitrogen and balanced fertilizer per 1,000 Sqft. A (2:1:1) ratio with 4-5% iron per season spread over 2 to 3 applications. Reduced application of nitrogen will favor the fine fescues as well. Do Not “over fertilize” to have a lush and green lawn, especially going into the months of October and November. Apply a uniform application at a rate listed on the fertilizer bag label.
