Key Takeaways

  • Dog Tuff™ is a warm-season bermudagrass that shrugs off dog urine and heavy paws, staying intact where Kentucky bluegrass burns into brown spots.
  • A Dog Tuff™ lawn uses far less water than bluegrass, which means lower summer bills and an easy fit with Colorado’s tightening water rules.
  • Greenlawn Sod is the first grower to offer Dog Tuff™ as ready-to-install sod, giving you a finished dog lawn in a day instead of a season of waiting on plugs.

What Is Dog Tuff™ Grass?

Dog Tuff™ grass is a tough, low-growing hybrid bermudagrass bred for dry Western yards. The plant is a sterile hybrid. It produces no viable seed. That means it cannot reseed into wild areas and turn invasive.

Instead, it spreads by runners along and just under the soil. Those runners knit into a dense, deep-rooted mat. The surface feels soft under bare feet.

This is not some untested novelty. Colorado State University turf specialists have studied it here for years. It was first found thriving in a Denver lawn during the 2002 drought.

Is Dog Tuff™ Grass Really Resistant to Dog Urine?

Yes, Dog Tuff™ grass resists dog urine far better than the cool-season grasses in most Colorado lawns. To see why, it helps to know what urine actually does to turf.

Dog urine is packed with nitrogen and salts. Kansas State University’s turf program explains that when a dog goes in the same spot over and over, concentrated nitrogen scorches the grass like spilled fertilizer. The salts dry out the roots on top of that. The result is the brown patch ringed with dark green that every dog owner knows.

Kentucky bluegrass is among the worst grasses for this. Warm-season grasses like bermudagrass handle the nitrogen and salt load much better. In my experience, Dog Tuff™ specifically holds up better than most traditional turf because it has higher salt tolerance and higher pH tolerance, which is exactly what a urine spot throws at it.

Dog Tuff™ goes a step further. It bounces back from urine and hard use by pushing out fresh runners to fill thin spots, and it actually spreads two ways at once, both beneath the soil and along the surface, which is what gives it such a strong ability to fill damaged areas and recover after traffic. Plant Select rates it as standing up to dog traffic and dog urine with little or no damage.

It handles the rough play, too. Sprinting, wrestling, and a worn path to the fence do not thin it out the way they thin out bluegrass.

How Much Water Does Dog Tuff™ Grass Save?

Dog Tuff™ grass uses roughly 50 to 70 percent less water than a traditional Kentucky bluegrass or tall fescue lawn. Once it is established, it gets by on very little. In summer, that often means only about half an inch of water a week.

This matters more in Colorado every year. Landscape irrigation accounts for a large share of city water use here. Most of that water goes to thirsty bluegrass.

The state is writing that reality into law. Colorado’s Senate Bill 24-005 steers new landscapes away from high-water ornamental grass. It favors low-water hybrids and native species instead. A grass like Dog Tuff™ sits comfortably on the water-wise side of that line.

Here is how Dog Tuff™ stacks up against the two grasses most Colorado dog owners are choosing between.

Dog Tuff™ Sod Is New in Colorado This Year

Until now, planting Dog Tuff™ meant buying plugs and waiting a full season. That has changed. Dog Tuff™ is finally available as sod.

Plugs are small grass starts you space out across bare soil. They fill in slowly over a growing season. In the meantime, you live with gaps and open dirt.

Sod is the finished lawn. It is grown on the farm and delivered in ready-to-lay pieces. You get a complete, green, dog-ready surface the day it goes down.

For a dog yard, that gap stage is the whole problem. Bare dirt plus a dog equals mud and holes. Sod skips that stage completely.

The reason we made this move now is that Dog Tuff™ had already proven itself here. Homeowners had been using it successfully in Colorado for years, so we had an established track record showing it performs well in local landscapes.

What changed on our end was the farming. Through our own growing practices, we were able to raise Dog Tuff™ in a way that lets it hold together properly for sod harvesting and installation, which is what finally made offering it as sod possible.

What to Know Before You Choose Dog Tuff™ Grass

Dog Tuff™ grass is not right for every yard. I would rather you hear the trade-offs from me now than discover them later. Here is what to weigh before you commit.

  • Winter dormancy. Dog Tuff™ is green from about June through early October on the Front Range. After the first hard chill, it turns tan and goes dormant. It is not dead. It greens up on its own every spring. Even so, you will look at a straw-colored lawn for part of the year.
  • Full sun. It thrives in hot, direct sun.
  • It spreads by runners. The same runners, stolons that help it heal and maintain a complete cover for the yard.
  • It will not mix with other grass. Dog Tuff™ does not blend into a cool-season lawn. You commit a whole area to it rather than overseeding into what you already have.
  • Higher upfront cost. Dog Tuff™ costs more up front than a traditional cool-season grass. In my experience, homeowners typically recover some of that difference over time through lower water bills, and the grass’s durability also means less money spent later replacing and repairing damage that a less traffic-tolerant lawn would have taken on.

What to Expect in the First 30 to 60 Days After Installation

The first 30 days are mostly about establishment. During this stretch, focus on getting your watering right, giving the roots time to take hold, and keeping foot and pet traffic to a minimum.

After about 30 days, your watering can start to change, and you can gradually bring back more pet and foot traffic. Over the full 60-day window, the goal is a gradual transition, moving from very limited use in those first weeks up to the normal or heavy use the lawn will eventually see.

How to Care for Dog Tuff™ Grass

Dog Tuff™ is about as low-maintenance as a lawn gets. It just does not follow the same playbook as a cool-season lawn. Here is what keeps it looking its best.

  • Watering. Once it is established, Dog Tuff™ asks for very little, often only every week or two in peak summer. Fresh sod is the exception, since it needs steady water while it roots. For that first stretch, our new-sod establishment guide covers the details.
  • Mowing. This is optional. Left alone, Dog Tuff™ rarely tops five inches and settles into soft, low mounds. If you prefer it tidy, once a month in summer is plenty. Take off no more than half an inch at a time to avoid scalping and sunburn.
  • Spring cleanup. This is the one task Dog Tuff™ really needs. Leave the tan winter growth in place through the cold months. Then, before the new green pushes up around mid May, cut it as short as your mower allows to speed a fuller green-up.
  • Weed killers. Skip them. Dog Tuff™ is very sensitive to common herbicides like 2,4-D and glyphosate. Hand-pulling or careful spot-treating is the safer route. A filled-in Dog Tuff™ lawn is also dense enough to crowd most weeds out on its own.
  • Fertilizer. Go light. Dog Tuff™ thrives on far less feeding than a bluegrass lawn. A little goes a long way.

Why Choose Greenlawn for Dog Tuff™ Sod in Colorado

At Greenlawn Sod, we are the only grower to bring Dog Tuff™ to Colorado as harvested sod. We produced and installed the first Dog Tuff™ sod lawn.

We have grown sod on the Front Range since 1969. Fifty-five years in this climate taught us which grasses actually survive this region’s altitude, sun, and water limits.

Our sod leaves the farm clean and dense. It carries no rocks and no dead spots. We haul it in covered trailers so it does not dry out before it reaches your yard.

This season’s Dog Tuff™ harvest window is short, and my honest advice is to get on our list early. A deposit is one option, but the important step is simply getting your name on the list. We start reaching out to interested customers as Dog Tuff™ becomes available in the spring, with availability typically around May 1.

Dog Tuff™ is not a one-time offer. We expect to make it available every year from around May 1 through September 15, while supplies last. That said, because inventory can sell out well before that window closes, I would still plan ahead rather than assume it will be available for the whole season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Dog Tuff™ grass come in sod or only plugs?

Now you can get it as sod. For years, Dog Tuff™ was sold only as plugs, because it is a sterile hybrid that sets no seed. This season can offer it as finished sod, which skips the slow plug fill-in and gives you a complete, dog-ready lawn the day it is laid.

When is the best time to plant Dog Tuff™ grass in Colorado?

Late spring through summer is the window. Dog Tuff™ is a warm-season grass. It will not green up until the soil warms and nighttime lows hold above about 50 degrees. On the Front Range, that usually means late May onward. Its love of heat makes summer a fine time to plant.

Is Dog Tuff™ grass safe for dogs and kids?

Yes. Dog Tuff™ is non-toxic and needs very little in the way of chemical treatment. That makes it safe for dogs and kids to play on. Its fine blades are also soft on paws and bare feet.

How much mowing does Dog Tuff™ grass need?

Very little. In a Colorado summer, mowing about once a month is usually enough, since it rarely climbs past roughly five inches. You can even skip mowing entirely and let it grow into soft, low mounds. If you do mow, take off no more than half an inch at a time to avoid scalping it.

Does Dog Tuff™ grass turn brown in winter?

Yes. Dog Tuff™ is a warm-season grass. It goes tan and dormant once nighttime temperatures fall in autumn. On the Front Range, it usually stays green from about early June to early October. It is not dead during dormancy. It greens up on its own each spring.

Will Dog Tuff™ grass spread into my flower beds or my neighbor’s yard?

It can. Dog Tuff™ spreads by runners above and below the soil, which is how it fills in and repairs itself. A physical edging or border along beds and property lines keeps it contained. Because it is sterile, it will never spread by seed.
